The Yoga Tree - a beautiful yoga centre in the heart of Norwich

The Yoga Tree is a beautiful yoga centre in the heart of Norwich.

We offer Yoga classes for every taste, instructed by our amazing yoga teachers. We also have guest teachers and exciting workshops on the weekends.

The centre is also home to The Root Café ↵ 'where good coffee meets good energy': open 7-3 Monday to Saturday, with monthly events on a Sunday.

For those who feel they are not ready for a yoga class, we have also a consultation room where you can take a private class, or have a session with one of our consultants to help guide your recovery and first steps on your yoga journey.

This is that eternal impermanent tree with roots up and branches down. That is pure, That is divine, That is called Indestructible. On it rests all the worlds, none transcend it. This is truly That. [Katha Upanisad]

When: Monthly
Next session: Saturday, 11th July
Time: 14:00-15:30

Cost: £22. Book Here ↵

This soulful session is a place to find peace, self-healing, and soulful comfort. As a 16 Year Yoga Instructor and Reiki Master Dianna is thrilled to offer a space that celebrates your own personal connection to energy work and spirituality.

The first portion of this session is meditation. Class begins with a few grounding movements and stretches to transition into our work. Gentle breathwork is offered to soothe the body and mindfully connect inward. We'll then move down through the chakra system and you'll use your own hands to connect to your body and mind's natural healing processes. This loving exercise will tend to your own energy-work and overall sense of ease. Finally, we'll work into a deep stillness and rest.

After a short break to rest, chat, journal, or just hang we'll head into an intuitive practice that rotates each month. Dianna will offer opportunities like card pulls, readings, spiritual discussions, or reiki to the group.

All understandings of meditation, energy work, and spirituality are welcome in class. You are encouraged to build confidence and connection inward.

Location Details
Parking is not available, but Dianna is happy to make parking and transportation recommendations via email.

Gift yourself or someone you love the ultimate in relaxation and time out in this immersive Sound Healing Experience.
You will have the opportunity to take some time for yourself to truly relax and be immersed in the soothing and healing sounds of Crystal Singing Bowls, Koshi Chimes, Tuned Pipes, Voice, Himalayan Singing Bowls, Wind Gong and Percussive Instruments. These instruments are played in a way that you experience a 'wash' of healing sounds with notable resonance and overtones which can induce an incredibly relaxing and meditative experience.
Soundbaths can have numerous benefits;
 • They can soothe, purify and harmonise your emotions and feelings.
 • They can induce a deep meditative state.
 • They can strengthen the immune system.
 • They can help you to recover after illness, traumas and invasive medical treatments.
 • They can balance both hemispheres of the brain.
 • They can induce deep relaxation & can help to improve quality of sleep.
 • They can cleanse energies and emotions that are not serving you well.
 • They can help to alleviate stress and anxiety.
Sound healing works on the principle that everything in our universe is energy which has a vibration. Everything in existence within the universe is in a vibrational state. The frequency at which we normally vibrate is called resonance and certain sounds resonate with different organs and parts of the body.
Sound has been scientifically proven to have a positive effect on our autonomic, immune & endocrine systems as well as a reduction in heart rate and blood pressure.
So why not come and join me and experience the amazing benefits these Sound Healing Immersions can offer you.

________ Yoga _________
Teacher Training

Yoga Teacher Training

The Yoga Tree offers an annual year-long 300hr yoga teacher training course in Norwich.

The course runs from January to December and takes breaks in line with school holidays.

Run by Swami Atma Gyanam Saraswati, this yoga teacher training takes you deeper into your practice, revealing the Why and How of yoga practice as well as how to lead your own practice or others as a confident and qualified yoga teacher.

As well as thoroughly learning the yoga postures, and how to teach them and adapt to different health conditions with training in anatomy and physiology, this course includes how to teach meditation and yoga nidra.

A one week long retreat gives personal experience of how yoga traditionally works in an ashram environment. Here you'll go beyond the theory learned in the philosophy module, and live it for a week.

Because much of the course is taught in class, where you slowly have the chance to put into practice your growing teaching skills and understanding, the cost is much lower than most yoga teacher training courses.

Local success stories from this teacher training course includes Ivana Prekopova from Happy Om, Tess Bickerstaff of Norwich Yoga Central, Jackie Heffer Cooke of Zen Mummas, and Tara Taylor of BishybeeYoga.

The Yoga Teacher Training Course has been running for over 10 years now. Is independently accredited and insurance offered to upon graduation.

To qualify for the course you must have at least two years regular practice, sample a class or two with Atma, and meet for a chat.

For more information on the time and financial commitment and to apply please Contact Atma.

Atma Gyanam began his practice in 1991, started teaching in 1999, started training teachers in 2010. In 2015 he received initiation as a Swami.

Atma teaches an approach to yoga posture he calls Bhava Yoga. A class includes warm ups and moving and held postures, often pranayama/breathwork, and a guided meditation or yoga nidra at the end. Bhava means 'A Feeling of Being' so we get the most out of the postures by imitating the natural forms the postures are named after and taking inspiration from each exercise.

Thursday evenings Chakra Yoga class is a more traditional Hatha Yoga practice, although elements of bhava yoga are still used, but it is specifically tailored to work with the classic 6 Chakras and Sahasrara. This class is also ideal as a preparation or to accompany practice of the Kriya Yoga method.

Atma's meditation classes are friendly and include a quiet tuning in time, some troubleshooting and instruction on different facets of meditation practice from his 30+ years of practice, and a guided meditation practice. Here you'll learn all the tools you need for a successful personal practice of meditation, and enjoy the support of a group of people all working in their own way.

Classes are appropriate for all levels of ability and experience. Private lessons and guidance are available by appointment.

EM BARBER

Em Barber

Em Barber qualified as a Certified TRE® Provider five years ago and teaches TRE in Norwich and North Norfolk.

TRE® - tension and trauma releasing exercises - works by down-regulating the nervous system, unsticking us from fight/flight/freeze survival modes that may have been vital in the past but no longer serve us well. Through this practice, we develop a better connection to our bodies, our instincts and our selves.

Devised by Dr David Berceli, TRE® has a rapidly growing reputation as a novel approach to recovery from long-held tension and trauma. It not only allows our systems to release from stuck, protective patterns, but develops into an increased ability to better manage everyday stresses and strains.

In a TRE session, we induce natural tremors that allow the body to release held stress and tension and soothe the nervous system. This brings balance to our physiology and calmness to our minds. We take a “bottom up” approach, letting the primitive brain take the lead and trusting the process. Em's role is to hold a safe, supportive and grounded space where you can learn and develop your own TRE practice.

Em begins the session with a grounding exercise before moving through the seven exercises of TRE, where you will experience the involuntary tremors in supported safety. The session is completed with a final relaxing integration.

Em has many adaptations to the exercises that she can help you explore, making them accessible to all, although TRE is not recommended in pregnancy and within six months of major surgery.

EMILY BEALE

Emily Beale
Emily is a queer friendly, inclusive, trauma-informed teacher, with a focus on trauma-informed care and healing. A truly integrated approach to wellbeing and healing requires that we involve the body in some way - movement is medicine.

Gabrielle is a Vinyasa Yoga & Mobility teacher who has been teaching since 2021. She has been practicing yoga for several years and has a deep knowledge of anatomy. After running her own yoga studio in Congo, she moved to Norwich in the summer of 2024.

She leads yoga classes for all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners, offering variations adapted to each body and individual pace of practice.

Each class begins with an anchoring moment through pranayama and meditation, followed by a creative and dynamic vinyasa and mobility flow. Classes may lead to a peak posture, explore a specific theme, or simply unfold as a general flow, and always end with a deep relaxation (counter-poses, pranayama, and meditation in savasana).

Her classes combine functional mobility exercises, embodied movement exploration, flowing sequences of asanas, pranayama, and guided meditation. This holistic practice strengthens the entire body in a sustainable way
while nurturing the mind. It develops both active and passive flexibility, deepens movement and breathing techniques, improves balance and concentration, and above all encourages letting go.

JAIME C.LAM

Jaime C.Lam
Jaime was first introduced to yoga in 2012 as a form of work-life balance in modern day's hustle culture. Soon after, Jaime discovered yoga's special ability to connect the mind to the body and has been hooked ever since! Her own yoga practice consists of hatha and vinyasa yoga whilst incorporating iyengar yoga from time to time as well. Jaime completed her yoga teacher training (Yoga Alliance) in Thailand in 2019 and continued her journey as a yoga student and teacher since then.

She now teaches vinyasa classes - her love for vinyasa yoga stems from its perfect reflection of life - respecting and acknowledging the impermanent nature of the world: we enter an asana, we are there for a while, and we eventually leave and enter another.

Jaime's classes are suitable for all levels, encouraging all to respect their bodies. Her classes always start with a breathing exercise to help students focus their minds and to set an intention for their practice. Jaime likes to pay attention to the need of every individual student in her class. Students will complete their practice feeling powerful, grounded, thankful (to their own minds and bodies!) and safe.

- Specialises in Kundalini yoga.

Katrina helps people overcome stress, trauma and emotional pain through Kundalini yoga and chakra clearing.

"I am now a Kundalini yoga teacher, because it literally changed my life. Before discovering Kundalini yoga, I never knew my own voice. I was forever people pleasing, trying to fit in and as consequence, attracted many toxic people into my life. Having learned my own worth, and falling in love with the person I am, I am now dedicated to helping others find their inner truth, the same way I found mine - which is through realigning with the chakras (our energetic system) through Kundalini yoga.

I am a fully 500 hours YTT qualified Kundalini yoga teacher. I completed my 200 hours of YTT in Dharamsala India in 2018, which focused on most genres of yoga, including meditation, Yin, Hatha and Vinyasa. In 2020, I returned to India, this time Rishikesh to study my 300 hours YTT in Kundalini yoga, which was also the time the world stood still. We were in India during the lockdown, for 7 months. I carry with me today, further training and experience from running my own sessions and attending others, during our time in India.

I am also a qualified Autism specialist and have a Masters degree in Adult Autism. The work I do in Autism is all about helping autism adults overcome high levels of anxiety through Kundalini yoga, meditation, breath work, mindfulness and nutrition. It is my aim to work on a doctorate that marries Autism and Kundalini yoga."

MAXINE MATTHEWS

Maxine Matthews

Maxine teaches an approach to yoga first pioneered by the late Vanda Scaravelli. The teaching is creative, non-dogmatic, and respects individual differences.

Maxine has been teaching for 20 years+, originally in London with The Himalayan Institute, then here in Norwich since 2005. She holds a Teaching Diploma from British Wheel of Yoga. She also has experience of organizing and teaching Yoga workshops, retreats and Foundation Teacher Training courses.

Her approach works with our relationship to the ground and the space around us, gravity, breath and movement being components of the practice. It is an integrated approach that asks for our full attention, sometimes quiet, sometimes dynamic, but always with a strong sense of enquiry.

Maxine also draws from The Feldenkrais Method and Somatic education to enhance a varied approach, understanding that our practice is about being present moment to moment.

NICK JACKSON

Nick Jackson
I began practising mindfulness in 2017 with a course in mindfulness-based stress relief.  The course helped to me to deal with a significant life event but, more than that, it made me more aware of patterns of thinking and behaving which had been restricting my life.  The power of coming into the present moment allowed me to experience anew the beauty of the world and perceive my place in it more clearly.

I have been training as a mindfulness teacher since 2021.  I am a student of Bangor University and take part in an ongoing programme of training events, retreats and I receive regular supervision.

I feel a strong urge to share this learning and the gentle techniques which allow it, with others so they too can benefit from this life-changing awareness.

For me, mindfulness is not about getting new knowledge but about becoming aware of what I have always known and it's less about getting to a better place than appreciating the place I'm already in.  That's it, in a nutshell.  But don't take my word for it, find out for yourself...

POPPY

Poppy
Poppy discovered yoga in 2018, after years of demanding jobs, hectic commutes and hundreds of hours hunched over a laptop. She loved that yoga felt like it was working with her body rather than punishing it - and that practicing with others felt companionable rather than competitive.

While Poppy enjoyed finding increased fitness, strength and balance, over time she came to realise that the true power of yoga lies in its ability to steady the mind. She discovered that what she valued most was the way yoga quietly teaches you to step outside your thoughts, to feel resilient under pressure, and to hold space for yourself - and others - to just be.

Wanting to learn more, in 2025 she completed her 200-hour teacher training with Power Living in Australia - a course she chose for its emphasis on applying the philosophies of yoga to modern life.

Poppy's classes are an extension of what she loves most about yoga: inclusivity, connection, joy, and the sense of coming home to yourself.

Expect energising vinyasa flows followed by gentle, restorative poses, a touch of philosophy, and a cosy savasana.

TARA TAYLOR

Tara Taylor
I'm Tara — a yoga and movement teacher, Traditional Thai bodyworker, sauna ritualist, gardener and lifelong student of the human body.

My work is shaped by curiosity, compassion and a deep connection to nature. I've navigated injury, caregiving, grief and the challenges of modern life, and movement has always been the thread that held me together. It helped me rebuild my strength, calm my mind and reconnect with myself, and now I'm here to share those practices with you.

I teach from lived experience, from science-informed movement study, and from the gentle, steady wisdom that comes from meeting myself (and my students) exactly where we are. People often describe me as grounded, nurturing and “mother earth” in energy. My spiritual name is Narayani, which means strength and compassionate love, qualities I hope you feel in every class or treatment.

TOM HURRELL

Tom Hurrell
My journey into yoga began through meditation at a pivotal time in my life. What started as a way to find balance through the challenges of work, study and new fatherhood quickly grew into a deep love of eastern philosophy and yoga. I trained at the Apanaveda School of Yoga here in the UK, completing my 200hr IYN-certified course, and now teach a slow and intentional style of yoga, weaving classical sequences like the sun salutation with space for stillness and awareness.

My Friday lunchtime class is designed as a gentle weekly wind-down, especially for those new to yoga. It offers space to pause, soften and reconnect after the busyness of the week. Through breathwork, mindful movement and meditation, I guide students into the weekend with a sense of ease and presence.

__ About The Yoga Tree __
& Atma Gyanam

The Yoga Tree, an oasis of peace in the centre of Norwichh
Joss Guin

In 2012 a yoga teacher named Joss was walking down All Saints Green when he saw a crumbling ruin of a building and saw the potential for a beautiful Yoga studio. Existence took it's time agreeing, but there is no rushing in Yoga.

Joss Guin now Swami Atma Gyanam Saraswati began a dedicated practice of Yoga at the age of 14. Initially self led, over the years he has had initiation in Kriya Yoga from Swami Janakananda, personal tuition over 7 years from Swami Muktibodhananda (author of the Bihar Yoga Schools translation of Hatha Yoga Pradipika), completed a 600hr teacher training course with Kate Pell, received mantra initiation from Paramahansa Niranjanananda, and initiated as Swami in 2015 by Swami Nischalananda Saraswati. As Joss Guin he authored his first book Karma Yoga. As Swami Atma Gyanam Saraswati he authored his second book The Song of Life. Atma has been teaching for over 20 years and training yoga teachers for over 10 years.

Swami Atma Gyanam Saraswati

After returning from Australia to Norwich in 2009 following 4 years of working as a regional manager, campaigner and fundraiser to protect our environment the name The Yoga Tree seemed appropriate to call the Yoga school. He named it after his two favourite things.

In 2016 The Yoga Tree opened its doors on All Saints Green providing a beautiful space for Yoga and other therapies. It is now a thriving community of over 20 yoga teachers, therapists, a cosy place to eat healthy home cooked food, and as one regular puts it 'an oasis of peace in the centre of Norwich' that is here for everyone.

It's a place to move you towards your true state of health and happiness. Whether you initially need 121 help from our in house osteopath, person centred integrative therapist, or Yoga therapist, or an introductory 121 on yoga. Or be welcomed to a variety of classes suitable for beginners of every age or level of fitness, from very mild gentle classes, to strong exercise. Or go deeper with meditation or spiritual guidance. Energetic healing with reiki or spiritual healing with the medicine wheel. Or simply to sit and read, work or chat in the cafe. The Yoga Tree is here for you.
