The centre is also home to The Root Café ↵ 'where good coffee meets good energy': open 7-3 Monday to Saturday, with monthly events on a Sunday.

For those who feel they are not ready for a yoga class, we have also a consultation room where you can take a private class, or have a session with one of our consultants to help guide your recovery and first steps on your yoga journey.

This is that eternal impermanent tree with roots up and branches down. That is pure, That is divine, That is called Indestructible. On it rests all the worlds, none transcend it. This is truly That. [Katha Upanisad]

As the nights get longer and darker and we approach a New Year in The Celtic Wheel of the Year. Come join me for 2 hours of restful and restorative yoga postures, yoga nidra, guided meditation and sound therapy to celebrate the festival of Samhain or All Hallows Eve/Halloween.

Candlelight and calm await you as you enter the sacred space that will be created for your practice.

Restorative Yoga is the Yoga of long held, supportive yoga postures, which uses blankets, blocks, bricks, cushions and bolsters to hold and support you into a deep, receptive state of rest. The ultimate yoga of undoing and being. Your postures will be accompanied by poetry and readings reflective of the Celebration of Samhain.

Yoga Nidra is a powerful technique where you learn to relax consciously. It is a systematic method of inducing complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation, allowing you to drop down into a deep, restful state where transformational healing can occur.

Yoga Nada is the Yoga of Sound; Sound Therapy works on the principle that everything in our universe is energy which has a vibration. Everything in existence within the universe is in a vibrational state. The frequency at which we normally vibrate is called resonance and certain sounds resonate with different organs and parts of the body. Sound has been scientifically proven to have an effect on our autonomic, immune & endocrine systems as well as the neuropeptide transmitters in our brain.

You can expect to hear the sounds of the Himalayan Singing Bowls, Crystal Singing Bowls, Koshi Chimes, Tuned Pipes, Earth Drum, Tingshas, Gongs and percussive instruments all played in a way to support and facilitate a deeply restful state of being.

All of these practices combined together will guide you into the most sumptuous state of blissful ease and relaxation ready to navigate your way into the New Celtic Year.

You will have the opportunity to take some time for yourself to truly relax and be immersed in the soothing and healing sounds of Crystal Singing Bowls, Koshi Chimes, Tuned Pipes, Voice, Himalayan Singing Bowls, Wind Gong and Percussive Instruments. These instruments are played in a way that you experience a 'wash' of healing sounds with notable resonance and overtones which can induce an incredibly relaxing and meditative experience.
Soundbaths can have numerous benefits;
 • They can soothe, purify and harmonise your emotions and feelings.
 • They can induce a deep meditative state.
 • They can strengthen the immune system.
 • They can help you to recover after illness, traumas and invasive medical treatments.
 • They can balance both hemispheres of the brain.
 • They can induce deep relaxation & can help to improve quality of sleep.
 • They can cleanse energies and emotions that are not serving you well.
 • They can help to alleviate stress and anxiety.
Sound healing works on the principle that everything in our universe is energy which has a vibration. Everything in existence within the universe is in a vibrational state. The frequency at which we normally vibrate is called resonance and certain sounds resonate with different organs and parts of the body.
Sound has been scientifically proven to have a positive effect on our autonomic, immune & endocrine systems as well as a reduction in heart rate and blood pressure.
So why not come and join me and experience the amazing benefits these Sound Healing Immersions can offer you.

Teacher Training

Yoga Teacher Training

The Yoga Tree offers an annual year-long 300hr yoga teacher training course in Norwich.

The course runs from January to December and takes breaks in line with school holidays.

Run by Swami Atma Gyanam Saraswati, this yoga teacher training takes you deeper into your practice, revealing the Why and How of yoga practice as well as how to lead your own practice or others as a confident and qualified yoga teacher.

As well as thoroughly learning the yoga postures, and how to teach them and adapt to different health conditions with training in anatomy and physiology, this course includes how to teach meditation and yoga nidra.

A one week long retreat gives personal experience of how yoga traditionally works in an ashram environment. Here you'll go beyond the theory learned in the philosophy module, and live it for a week.

Because much of the course is taught in class, where you slowly have the chance to put into practice your growing teaching skills and understanding, the cost is much lower than most yoga teacher training courses.

Local success stories from this teacher training course includes Ivana Prekopova from Happy Om, Tess Bickerstaff of Norwich Yoga Central, Jackie Heffer Cooke of Zen Mummas, and Tara Taylor of BishybeeYoga.

The Yoga Teacher Training Course has been running for over 10 years now. Is independently accredited and insurance offered to upon graduation.

To qualify for the course you must have at least two years regular practice, sample a class or two with Atma, and meet for a chat.

For more information on the time and financial commitment and to apply please Contact Atma.

ATMA GYANAM

Atma Gyanam
Atma Gyanam began his practice in 1991, started teaching in 1999, started training teachers in 2010. In 2015 he received initiation as a Swami.

Atma teaches an approach to yoga posture he calls Bhava Yoga. A class includes warm ups and moving and held postures, often pranayama/breathwork, and a guided meditation or yoga nidra at the end. Bhava means 'A Feeling of Being' so we get the most out of the postures by imitating the natural forms the postures are named after and taking inspiration from each exercise.

Thursday evenings Chakra Yoga class is a more traditional Hatha Yoga practice, although elements of bhava yoga are still used, but it is specifically tailored to work with the classic 6 Chakras and Sahasrara. This class is also ideal as a preparation or to accompany practice of the Kriya Yoga method.

Atma's meditation classes are friendly and include a quiet tuning in time, some troubleshooting and instruction on different facets of meditation practice from his 30+ years of practice, and a guided meditation practice. Here you'll learn all the tools you need for a successful personal practice of meditation, and enjoy the support of a group of people all working in their own way.

Classes are appropriate for all levels of ability and experience. Private lessons and guidance are available by appointment.

FAYE GILLERY

Faye Gillery
I am an Ayurvedic Lifestyle and Nutrition Consultant, passionate about creating nourishing Ayurvedic-inspired dishes that support health and vitality. Recently, I travelled to Sri Lanka where I immersed myself in local Ayurvedic traditions. I lived with local families to see how they use this ancient “knowledge of life” within cooking and their use of local herbs and spices to prepare Ayurvedic home remedies. I explored the spice region to connect with the fertile land and Ayurvedic herbs and spices which are incorporated into my work as an Ayurvedic practitioner. This experience enriched my understanding of Ayurveda and my love of cooking with spices - expanding my repertoire of recipes inspired by the East. I am excited to share this knowledge within this second series of workshops.

My journey into Ayurveda began after overcoming complex chronic illness that had a profound impact on my life for over a decade, during which diet helped considerably. This transformative experience ignited my curiosity to explore holistic and complementary approaches to wellbeing. I was guided to Ayurveda's principles as it deeply resonated with my healing journey. My work is influenced by my love for food, and herbs and spices - going back to a traditional approach of what we eat can complement our lifestyle and enhance our overall wellbeing and quality of life. My vision is to inspire you to embrace a natural, balanced lifestyle, and to share the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda.

HOLLIEANN THORN

Hollieann Thorn
Hi! I'm Hollieann.

One sentence from a class instructor changed my life forever. A few kind, simple words so powerful that they stopped me in my tracks at a time in my life which was full of turbulence and uncertainty.
This began my journey in fitness, cognitive behavioural therapy and self discovery.
This has shaped my approach to coaching both in and out of the studio, and it is my aspiration to be that voice for many others. Starting with assessing our preconceived notions of body image and our relationship with ourselves, identifying limiting beliefs which we may be aware of, but also those which are hiding under the surface. Rebuilding our foundations which shaped our behaviours and how we see ourselves in this world for the rest of our lives, then striving for a future full of strength in both mind and body.

Through freedom of mind, unburdening yourself from past trauma and a true trust; let movement, sound and release be the foundation to each of our practices together in my classes. Embody this empowerment through the rest of your day and join me in a journey of self discovery.

JAIME C.LAM

Jaime C.Lam Open Yoga Alliance Professionals, UK in new tab
Jaime was first introduced to yoga in 2012 as a form of work-life balance in modern day's hustle culture. Soon after, Jaime discovered yoga's special ability to connect the mind to the body and has been hooked ever since! Her own yoga practice consists of hatha and vinyasa yoga whilst incorporating iyengar yoga from time to time as well. Jaime completed her yoga teacher training (Yoga Alliance) in Thailand in 2019 and continued her journey as a yoga student and teacher since then.

She now teaches vinyasa classes - her love for vinyasa yoga stems from its perfect reflection of life - respecting and acknowledging the impermanent nature of the world: we enter an asana, we are there for a while, and we eventually leave and enter another.

Jaime's classes are suitable for all levels, encouraging all to respect their bodies. Her classes always start with a breathing exercise to help students focus their minds and to set an intention for their practice. Jaime likes to pay attention to the need of every individual student in her class. Students will complete their practice feeling powerful, grounded, thankful (to their own minds and bodies!) and safe.

"I am now a Kundalini yoga teacher, because it literally changed my life. Before discovering Kundalini yoga, I never knew my own voice. I was forever people pleasing, trying to fit in and as consequence, attracted many toxic people into my life. Having learned my own worth, and falling in love with the person I am, I am now dedicated to helping others find their inner truth, the same way I found mine - which is through realigning with the chakras (our energetic system) through Kundalini yoga.

I am a fully 500 hours YTT qualified Kundalini yoga teacher. I completed my 200 hours of YTT in Dharamsala India in 2018, which focused on most genres of yoga, including meditation, Yin, Hatha and Vinyasa. In 2020, I returned to India, this time Rishikesh to study my 300 hours YTT in Kundalini yoga, which was also the time the world stood still. We were in India during the lockdown, for 7 months. I carry with me today, further training and experience from running my own sessions and attending others, during our time in India.

NICK JACKSON

Nick Jackson
I began practising mindfulness in 2017 with a course in mindfulness-based stress relief.  The course helped to me to deal with a significant life event but, more than that, it made me more aware of patterns of thinking and behaving which had been restricting my life.  The power of coming into the present moment allowed me to experience anew the beauty of the world and perceive my place in it more clearly.

I have been training as a mindfulness teacher since 2021.  I am a student of Bangor University and take part in an ongoing programme of training events, retreats and I receive regular supervision.

I feel a strong urge to share this learning and the gentle techniques which allow it, with others so they too can benefit from this life-changing awareness.

For me, mindfulness is not about getting new knowledge but about becoming aware of what I have always known and it's less about getting to a better place than appreciating the place I'm already in.  That's it, in a nutshell.  But don't take my word for it, find out for yourself...

RICHARD WOODALL

Richard Woodall Open Power Living in new tab
Rich has been teaching all over the world since 2014. Yoga for Rich is all about union and non-duality

He got into the practice when he realised that his body and his mind were often in different places, as much as his thoughts and his feelings of happiness were too.

Yoga philosophy gave Rich the space to live in a more truthful way, in union with his beliefs and ideas of life and existence. Also with more peace and acceptance of self. Living by the heart became a daily practice as well as grounding and finding space, physically and emotionally.

His Vinyasa classes are both dynamic and relaxing. He introduces a modern approach to yoga whilst fully embracing tradition and its beautiful philosophy.

The Yin classes are super super chilled; deep longer-hold postures all on the floor, laying or sitting down. Always taught, from the heart, with beautiful music and philosophical topics.

He's a true believer that yoga is for everyone. We just have to give it a try!

When he's not teaching, he's usually writing, playing the guitar and having a sing song, or finding a beach somewhere to be near the water.

Open Future Fit Training in new tab
Rosie had a fitness mentor who inspired and encouraged her to train with the Future Fit School of Pilates.

Having suffered with a creaky back for years, she found that Pilates strengthened her back and core like no other sport she had tried. She has been delighted with the progress some of her clients have made, in short periods of time, with their balance, posture, core strength, body awareness and confidence.

She likes to fly in the face of convention and try new things and would encourage everyone to try Pilates as their new thing as the benefits are clear soon after starting.

Her classes are inclusive, mixed ability, gentle but concentrated exercise. For the gardeners, the carers, those with sore backs, knees, hips, shoulders: you get the idea!

RUSSELL GOUS

Russell Gous
My personal yoga journey began in my mid-20s when I was a stiff "office guy" often stuck in my head. Yoga offered me a steady transformation, helping me to loosen my body, ease the rigidity of my mind, and live a more heart centred life. This slow but sure transformative experience reshaped my perception and interaction with life, fueling my passion to share yoga's benefits with others.

I completed my 250-hour Yoga Teacher Training in India in 2024, rooted in a traditional understanding of Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga. My training explored a holistic approach, extending beyond just the yoga postures on the mat.

My classes are designed to offer a diverse understanding of yoga styles and mindful movement. With an ongoing interest in yoga, I constantly explore new themes. I'll weave insights gained from my continued study with experienced teachers in Norwich, throughout India, and across the globe. Some weeks we'll focus on finding presence in longer holds, while others we'll explore dynamic and intuitive flows. Whatever the class, they're designed for all, aiming to leave you satisfyingly challenged.

SEAN MURRAY

Sean Murray
As a new teacher, my classes are collaborative, I will be learning just as much as you. Sharing our experiences, struggles and strengths lets us help one another grow. Taking elements from both hatha and ashtanga yoga and Buddhist meditations, classes focus on stretching the body and surrendering the mind to become more embodied, balanced and present.

After years of battling a cluttered mind, a body I felt was alien to me and negative attachments, I turned to yoga and meditation. They initially provided some relief, though it wasn't until I committed to daily practice during my recovery that I found peace. The mental clarity and newfound connection to my body I have gained are priceless. In 2023, I decided I wanted to pass on these gifts and embarked on a 200-hour YTT training in Rishikesh, India immersing myself in Hatha and Ashtanga yoga. Following this I embarked on a pilgrimage to Buddhist sites, and sat a vipassana course all of these experiences have helped deepen my practise of these traditions. Taking a little from all of my experiences I am now grateful to share these tools with others who may find these practices as invaluable as I have.

TOM HURRELL

Tom Hurrell
My journey into yoga began through meditation at a pivotal time in my life. What started as a way to find balance through the challenges of work, study and new fatherhood quickly grew into a deep love of eastern philosophy and yoga. I trained at the Apanaveda School of Yoga here in the UK, completing my 200hr IYN-certified course, and now teach a slow and intentional style of yoga, weaving classical sequences like the sun salutation with space for stillness and awareness.

My Friday lunchtime class is designed as a gentle weekly wind-down, especially for those new to yoga. It offers space to pause, soften and reconnect after the busyness of the week. Through breathwork, mindful movement and meditation, I guide students into the weekend with a sense of ease and presence.

__ About The Yoga Tree __
& Atma Gyanam

The Yoga Tree, an oasis of peace in the centre of Norwichh
Joss Guin

In 2012 a yoga teacher named Joss was walking down All Saints Green when he saw a crumbling ruin of a building and saw the potential for a beautiful Yoga studio. Existence took it's time agreeing, but there is no rushing in Yoga.

Joss Guin now Swami Atma Gyanam Saraswati began a dedicated practice of Yoga at the age of 14. Initially self led, over the years he has had initiation in Kriya Yoga from Swami Janakananda, personal tuition over 7 years from Swami Muktibodhananda (author of the Bihar Yoga Schools translation of Hatha Yoga Pradipika), completed a 600hr teacher training course with Kate Pell, received mantra initiation from Paramahansa Niranjanananda, and initiated as Swami in 2015 by Swami Nischalananda Saraswati. As Joss Guin he authored his first book Karma Yoga. As Swami Atma Gyanam Saraswati he authored his second book The Song of Life. Atma has been teaching for over 20 years and training yoga teachers for over 10 years.

Swami Atma Gyanam Saraswati

After returning from Australia to Norwich in 2009 following 4 years of working as a regional manager, campaigner and fundraiser to protect our environment the name The Yoga Tree seemed appropriate to call the Yoga school. He named it after his two favourite things.

In 2016 The Yoga Tree opened its doors on All Saints Green providing a beautiful space for Yoga and other therapies. It is now a thriving community of over 20 yoga teachers, therapists, a cosy place to eat healthy home cooked food, and as one regular puts it 'an oasis of peace in the centre of Norwich' that is here for everyone.

It's a place to move you towards your true state of health and happiness. Whether you initially need 121 help from our in house osteopath, person centred integrative therapist, or Yoga therapist, or an introductory 121 on yoga. Or be welcomed to a variety of classes suitable for beginners of every age or level of fitness, from very mild gentle classes, to strong exercise. Or go deeper with meditation or spiritual guidance. Energetic healing with reiki or spiritual healing with the medicine wheel. Or simply to sit and read, work or chat in the cafe. The Yoga Tree is here for you.
